2011 The Mini Rocketman

As consumers start to shift their attention to cars that are more economically friendly as well as stylish, automobile makers are coming up with unique and interesting designs. The 2011 Geneva Motor show revealed a number of new vehicles that will be hitting the streets in the coming months, and there are several promising models.

While fuel efficiency may have been a common factor a few years ago, the vehicles that were out for view at the show ranged from sports cars to range rovers and even luxury cars. It is apparent that the body of the car is no longer the limitation; and with some cars getting 150 mpg, there is no telling what the coming models will be capable of.

The first car that will be covered is the Nissan ESFLOW. This stylish sports car can seat 2 people and even has the ability to travel 150 miles on a single charge. Pair this mileage with the power to go from 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds, and it is very easy to see why so many people have their eyes on this vehicle. Nissan has also designed the ZOE with Renault. The ZOE has a top speed of about 84 mph and can go from 0 to 60 in 8.1 seconds.

hen it was launched, many industry commentators complained that BMW’s New Mini was neither as compact nor as affordable as its illustrious predecessor had been. In a possible effort to address this (and no doubt to compete with the likes of the competitions smaller offerings), MINI will be showing the Rocketman Concept at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show this March.

New Mini Rocketman concept car

Even those who veered away from the original city car inevitably came back to what they knew and adored, the tiny stylings of a car that was instrumental in marking the contemporary movement from austere practicality to a rather more indulgent way of life. But there was a problem, because after that initial breakthrough in stylistic imagination, the Mini Cooper didn't really keep up with the times.

Certainly if any vehicle could rest on its laurels it would be the Mini, but the announcement of BMW's intention to update that most beloved of British cars could not have been more welcome. The revitalised Mini is a triumph of technology, the perfect blend of classic influence and modern design!

MINI describes the Rocketman Concept as a “3 + 1 seater” with exterior dimensions that closely emulate the original Mini of 1959. The one-off concept is 3,419 mm (11 ft. 3 in.) long, 1,907 mm (6 ft. 3 in.) wide and 1,398 mm(4 ft. 7 in.) tall. It sits on a carbon spaceframe underbody that is left visible in some parts of the exterior and cabin.

The Rocketman Concept’s exterior continues MINI’s current design language and incorporates features such as LED head- and taillights, 18-inch wheels, a split-tailgate and illuminated roof braces that imitate the Union Jack.

The Mini Rocketman concept in Geneva motorshow

Ian Robertson from BMW sales and marketing said that most of the concepts in the Mini range actually make it into production which throws a huge hint that they will produce the new model for the mass market. He also stated that the team from BMW is "good at looking at the history (of the car) and interpreting a future for it." He also hinted that this was not just a smaller version of the original car. He said that the company is trying to use lighter weight and new components, he also hinted that all members of the BMW group would be initiating the BMW-i technology to their cars.

Whilst this new small sized model is a big change for the manufacturer it is thought that the main focus of the brand will still be around its traditional three door and coupe models. The model really does look quite good. Personally I think that when a lot of manufacturers venture into the compact car market the end product can often look clumsy and awkward.
